Pokemon didn't settle into the same media machine it is now till near the end of gen 3. This is why you saw the gen 4 mons being merchandised near the back half of gen 3. Seven is just a retroactive merchandise darling.

The new style makes him look more like a typical bishounen but I think he was still pretty popular before ORAS. I find old Steven more attractive

I feel like part of it might just be that the new games give you a much more thorough look at him. If you play gen 3 you see his battle sprite once when you face him, and again from the back briefly during a tag battle in Emerald. Gen 6 just has the full artwork on display, while >>38049103 wasn't exactly a widespread picture

Archie and Maxie at least got actual, distinct character and designs in ORAS. The original Archie and Maxie may as well have been the same person with a change of clothes.

I always adored him. The problem is that 5th and 6th graders didn't have sex drives and social media didn't really exist, while older fans were a significant minority. He's my favorite Pokémon husbando, but I just have a fetish for characters who remind me of Lawrence from Spice & Wolf.
