Do you think Venusaur and Blastoise would be unpopular if they came out in newer gens? Fat starters seem to get more flak nowadays

What fat starters? Emboar gets flak, but that's more due to being a 3rd fire/fighting in a row. If anything it'd be refreshing to have some starters that weren't based off a Fantasy RPG class

Not only is that not a class, but Incineroar is a wrestler, not a pugilist. He's not a berserker or a barbarian, either.
Besides that, the Kalos starters fit the three main archetypes, whereas Ranger and Bard are hybrid classes - and Decidueye and Primarina fit them much more loosely than the Kalos starters fit theirs.

Considering all the newer starters since Gen6 tend to be very simple with barely any details.
Venusaur would have been a much different and simpler design.

I enjoy the bara/bulky archetype out of the three because they are the closest thing to the early Gen starters. I’d say that Sceptile and Blaziken were the first truly sleek looking starters
