The early game pacing was really good, there was no rush and I liked how not every place you went to was a gym town, it helped fleshed out the region, even some of the routes were unique and had a lot of soul.
The pokemon selection was fantastic. Decent chunk of new mon, lots of oldmons, and a very very diverse selection starting pretty early on.
Monamie and the PSS were introduced and both were huge leaps in interacting with your pokemon and taking the clunky aspects of pokemon (online battling/trading, EV training, etc) and cleanly putting them all in one menu.
Visually the region is really beautiful and the overworld music was fantastic. Lots of town themes like Cyllage City, Geosenge Town, Anistar City, Snowbelle City, the bike them are incredibly memorable.
Mega Evolution, at the very least as a concept, was an awesome way to customize your team, explore new strategies with old mons, and give a breath of new life to unviable pokemon.
The postgame stories with Looker, Emma and Mimi were charming and gave you something fun to do in Lumiose. There wasn't a lot of post game legendaries, but there were some and that in itself gives you something to hunt.
