Ash is just clueless about everything, why do you think he lost the leagues in the first place (besides the story arc wanting him to keep on travelling)

If he was smarter he would have got:
-Charazard to listen in time for the league

-His other Pokemon to fully evolve.

-Catch more Pokemon.

-slept with Misty every chance he got

-Slept with Anabell.

-kept on winning Top Spot in Leagues (as it was stated he can not challange any other E4 but Kantos)

-Not released any of his Pokemon.

-Found a way for Pikachu to attain a kind of Mega Evolution/Bond Evolution.

-used all he learned and stayed strong even with just having Pikachu on his shoulder.
