Well if you want to give them a deeper meaning, I think the four humors could work. Obviously this has no basis but you are right, the legendary should represent something more symbolic.

Gamfreak made Virizion and Cobalion too weak for PvP and yet too strong for ingame. The genies outclassed them from the start.

Pokemon has been based off of Kaiju since the beginning. And the public domain of a very popular work of literature is what strikes you as odd inspiration?

If you wanna look deeper into than you should you can say the pig has red on it, serperior has white, and samurott has blue for the american flag.
But I think that's just a coincidence for serperior and of course fire type would be red and water type blue.

Seeing as the other two legendary trios in gen 5 are Japanese deities and philosophical concepts, the two main trios in the gen before are Japanese deities/mythical creatures and philosophical concepts and the main trio of the gen after is Norse deities, yes, it frankly does strike me as an odd inspiration that sticks out like a sore thumb

They're okay, I guess. I don't really like their designs much, but I don't hate them. I was mostly just disappointed that we finally got a group of Fighting type legendaries... and they turned out to all be quadruped. They don't even have fists! They made legendary Fighting types that can't punch!

It ain't right, I tell you. I guess I was hoping for something more ancient martial arts master-y.

Honestly, I think that legendary trios/quartets were generally a mistake, visibly so starting in Gen IV. I was glad Gen VI didn't bother with any, and then we had the tapus in Gen VII because fuck you.

You're right, I was really unclear there. I meant the secondary legendary trios like the birds, the beasts, the Regis, whatever the term is for Azelf/Mesprit/Uxie, the genies, the horses, and the tapus. Box legendary groups are generally fine and not what I was complaining about.
They weren't all bad, but them being a necessary and expected thing really started to sour in Gen III, and became just dull as all hell in Gen IV.
