Dragonite is an abomination to the Dratini line, if it was made in any gen other than the first (or second) it would be one of the most hated Pokemon in the series.

They wanted to create a surprisingly "cutesy" Dragon Pokemon that turns out to be a real powerhouse. Subversion or something like that.
Really they just soiled Dratini and Dragonair by turning it into an ugly fuck.
At least Kingdra is kinda pretty to look at and has the elegance that was taken from Dragonair at the time.

I always see people complain so much about Dragonite, saying that Dragonair is a fantastic design. But I don't really get why. it's a nice design but not nearly nice enough to warrant such immense hatred.
I at least understand where people who do the same shit for Dewott are coming from, even if I do like Samurott.
Plus the B/W anime actually did one thing right, its depiction of Dragonite is fucking perfect. Big gentle giant looking fella, but damn if he can't be a powerhouse.

Dragonite doesn’t look that bad, but to someone who likes dragonair’s design, it’s a huge disappointment to see such a different evolution, where not even a thing is kept in it’s new look

It wouldn't surpise me if early on they were two differnet lines but merged to make dragons rare.Hopefully it gets a form that looks more like the other two
