Gen 4: PSS
Gen 5: Infinite TMs, Triple Battles, Rotation Battles
Gen 6: Mega Evolutions
Gen 7: CheeZe Moves
According to these "patterns", it doesn't have to be a direct part of battles, even more considering that LGPE might be the new place to pander gay shit such as Zippy Zap or whatever.
Rather than something related directly to the Pokemon, I'm expecting a new type of battle. Maybe something like a double battle, but one of the Pokemon does the defense job, while the other deals with the attacking part. This can lead to trainers having limited choices for competitive teams, so instead of having 6 sweepers, they may be required to have tanks too.
I have no idea how that thing will work, and as of now we can only do wild guesses, but let's not forget that it doesn't have to be a change of form for the Pokemon such as armored evolution or fusion.
