It's more supposed to be a steely silvery color like Pupitar
Tyranitar's chest is also supposed to be a remnant of Pupitar's face which is why it becomes facelike again in the mega

He's a sandstorm monster, his design is supposed to look like he's leveled up from slow clunky rock beast to a more streamlined form, with more holes for the sand to flow from and wispy appendages to help control it.

Your crystal approach is less interesting, especially considering what >>38090531 mentioned with the original design making references to each member of the Larvitar family. At the very least you'd have to do better replicating that.

Mega Slowbro should have been more like a Hermit Crab. With the Slow Bro back on it's front legs, and the Shelder being dragged behind it. Point it's eyes forward too, to make it look more intimidating, or at least make them visible from the back, so the trainer using it can see the eyes properly. Slow King can be the spinning top of doom, if you really want it.
If it were up to me, I'd make Slow King the third form, instead of a branch, but that's not what this thread is about.

Gamefreak can come up with some contrived bullshit about how the Shellder gets better nutrients or something at the head and the Slowbro likes it because it amplifies it’s intelligence. Slowpoke ain’t dipping their heads in the water, so it could’ve been explained somehow.
