But Sobble has a clear theme set up. ALL it's names mention tears or crying. There's 100% going to be some extra theme that ties into that, be it just focusing on a shift in emotions to something more abstract like Comedy & Tragedy in acting.
Just saying "oh, it's a crying wimp and it'll toughen up as it evolves" is possible, but I think the more direct points are more likely.

Torterra is a great example of doing it right. It's not just a grass tortoise, it's specifically a landscape tortoise being tied to the World Turtle myth. The problem is just GF's laziness in wanting to make them all humanoid.
