I wouldn't be surprised if they retconned gens 6 and 7 into having never happened if only so they don't have to pay attention to megas and z-moves. They're going to have to make sure you can get every mega stone and z crystal in every game from now on, just like they have to put in an ice rock and magnet place in every game since they added those as evolution mechanics.

Not that I'm defending it, but starters have always been this way. The only ones that aren't are arguably the Gen 1 starters, but even then they're still relatively cutesy.
