Developers fucked up too. In Emerald if you choose Torchic then in the second battle, May has Torkoal for no reason. It's because in the game files it's right next to Slugma and Magcargo and some programmer misclicked. She uses Slugma in all later fights though.

Knowing that slugma was gen2 helped tho. Funny thing is I actually forgot later that slugma wasn't from gen3 but after looking back at my silver savefile 15+ years later I had a magcargo in one of the boxes, so I probably just have a very shitty memory.

Lots of people seem to have this problem. Skarmory is also mistaken as a Gen 3 pokemon from time to time. After all, the first time either of them were easily encountered was in Hoenn.
