If total rando’s can do this within a day (design, model, rig, and animate) then does gamefreak even have an excuse anymore for pumping out such fewer mons the last 2 gens

they do that because people complain when there are less pokemon from previous generations available. Take BW as the PERFECT example. So now they make sure to have the game almost exclusively pokemon from previous generations, but put the newer pokemon on pedetals and make fewer of them.

they've essentially accepted their fate and have limited themselves to compete with mobile games. There's no need for so much effort when you're only trying be more successful than Another Eden, Alto's Odyssey, etc, especially when your target audience is 6-12 year olds.

Not to mention that Gamefreak also has to design the Pokemon's gameplay aspects, which is only becoming increasingly more involved as every gen introduces an ever increasing percentage of Pokemon with unique and gimmicky moves or abilities.

Old Pokemon were designed with sprite limitations in mind, Gen 6 and 7 Pokemon have no limitations

Also how much money would they actually need to take the existing models that they've been recycling SINCE X AND Y and give them new animations? I'm sure game freak can afford to spend the millions of dollars they own to AT LEAST give all the pokemon dynamic poses and animations. How long are you people going to be content with pokemon standing around soullessly during a battle?

They did far from all the work involved with a pokemon, the design is both fairly simple and not amazing, and it took two experienced artists about a day.

Gamefreak has the resources to do it, but it's not exactly pocket change and that money can go elsewhere.

And the marketing team decided they shouldn't introduce too many Pokémon at once. If they wanted Sword and Shield to introduce 500 new Pokémon, they definitely could. But they won't.

I'm a 3D modeller who also does some 2D art, character design, and 3D animation. Lets say an average of 10 years experience across these fields.

Assuming 8 hour workdays I guess it would take me around 2 days to come up with a great design, 1 day to model and texture it, half a day to rig it, then.. lets say 4 animations per day depending on complexity. 5 or 6 days each at 100 mons would be almost two years of work for one person, excluding programming and game design work of course.

This work is divided across a bunch of people, I'm guessing at least 10 or so. So I think OP has kind of a point. They could easily add over 100 mons per gen, they're choosing not to do so for whatever reason.

GF have had 3 YEARS and a team of hundreds to do less than 100 Pokemon. They should easily be able to make 500 Pokemon with multiple animations in that time.

Holy shit. The hardest part of that whole thing is making the initial designs, then models and then animations. Imagine not being able to afford two or three teams to people to focus on the BIGGEST aspect of your franchise. The only reason GF doesn't put more time into the games is because they're so hellbent on pushing them out so quickly.

Well to be fair there are too many Pokemon to animate now. Resources are limited. When it comes to a niche series from a small developer you can only do so much. People need to give indie devs more credit. Sure, Nintendo might help out a bit here and there but keep in mind that money doesn't just print itself. Also who cares it's just a couple of animations anyway? The game itself isn't even affected and they can put that time they didn't waste on animations on fledging out stuff like difficulty modes, post-game content, cutscene options, QoL improvements etc.

So stop being so demanding and just enjoy what we get. You should be thankful there is someone still working on what is frankly a pretty old series at this point. It's not a given that sequels keep coming out. The best thing you can do is to keep supporting them with your wallets so at some point they might be able to take some risks.

In order to make a real change we, the Pokemon fans, have to support GF financially. I suggest we all donate to a Pokemon gofundme first.

In fact, people constantly use this distinction since these games have a lot more effort put into them than the mainline games and are meant to be smaller than the mainline games.

No one will be upset if they don’t animate Metapod using HJK. It’s about shit like Blastoise using its forehead to use Hydro Pump.
It’s also not like the Pokemon series isn’t used to recycling assets (especially when they keep reusing the models and animations ever since Gen 6 for mainline games)

That's probably why there's the massive graphic lag in Gen 6 and 7 games - the models are late HD and Game Freak were so incompetent, they didn't scale them down for a system meant to do 240p.

Not technically correct which is where the majority comes from.

We know for a fact that when 4Kids had the anime license it was 33 Game Freak 32 Nintendo and Creatures, and 3% 4Kids. No reason to assume with the deal dissolved it would've gone to anything but 34/33/33 since Game Freak was obviously intended to have the majority ownership.

You can debate about how much Nintendo realistically sees since they also own part of Creatures, but in the pure breakdown Game Freak is seeing the most from it directly.

Also, it doesn't even really matter. Any company would LOVE to be worth even 1% of 90 billion dollars let alone even an actual third.

Honestly the reason of why well get about 80-90 new Pokemon for ever gen from now is because its impossible to create 150+ new pokemon anymore, there's just not enough creativity to create a fresh roster when we have 809 Pokemon.

The actual reason is probably because they spent more time making each pokemon unique. Every single evolutionary family in Alola has a unique ability or signature move, with the sole technical exception being that all Ultra Beasts share Beast Boost.
