My problem with SM are:
1. I'm not even sure if the artstyle in itself is bad. I have no problem with how the new characters look. But nearly three years in and I haven't gotten used to Ash, TR, Misty and Brock, Delia and so on. And they don't just look different, they look worse. Fuck, I think M21 designs would be compatible with Alola ones and would look better.
2. The humor isn't funny. The meme faces are overused and make everything forced. Gags in general are overused here too.
3. There is nothing to anticipate. The closest the story has to something to look forward to was Ash's trials but even those are more or less a hobby. And now there may be a league, but this league feels lesser than the one in other regions because we haven't built anticipation for it in years and it isn't the culmination of an entire journey.
So how to fix SM?
1. Make old character designs better; it's not only the artstyle change, they shat on the redesigns specifically.
2. Cut the fucking memefaces.
3. Put the league in from start and make Pokemon school one of the avenues for getting into it in the absence of gyms. Also make the Aether/Necrozma arcs more present or foreshadowed instead of a handful of episodes.
