There's a reason shows from the past were better than ones now, and that's why. They knew adults would be watching alongside their children so they made the show for both in a way where you would end liking it even more hen you were older because then you understood both sides.
Now people just expect screens to babysit their children so they make most shows bland as hell. And the same applies to adult only stuff. The mix and the creativity required to make it was what was good about it, not sterile claptrap for specific ages.
If only Game Freak would actually do that we might have something here in terms of story.
