i used meganium, ampharos, golem, gyarados, pidgeot and houndoom in 2010. haven't done it since but I started a heartgold run the other day

I make it a habbit of first getting a tyranitar and dragonite before I tackle red. Tyranitar died in in volt tackle against pikachu so that was kinda fucked. ampharos was a champ tho and took out charizard with one thunder.

had to reset 7 times just so his pikachu doesnt one shot my ttar, then the other ones had to go decent with some heal spam and houndoom had to hit venusaur with choice scarf once then die and get revieved to kill it
