The best gens for bugs are probably gens 2 and 5. Gen 2's early route bugs are stinkers, but they did introduce two of the strongest bugs there are: Heracross and Scizor (plus Shuckle).
Gen 5 was the best for introducing bugs. The Venipede line, king of all bugs Volcarona, Joltik line, the awesomely designed Sewaddle line, the underrated Dwebble line, plus Shelmet/Karrablast lines and Durant which are also damn good.
Gen 4 was a spit in the eye for bug fans. Despite introducing Bug Buzz, the bug pokemon are horrible. There's the disappointingly weak Kricketot line, >Burmy, the inexplicable Combee line its opening gen, then they made Drapion a fucking dark/poison type. Must be why they made gen 5 so bug-heavy.
Gen 7 was also pretty good for bugs, with 2 Ultra Beasts, and only the Grubbin line being somewhat weak. Araquanid, Ribombee, and Golisopod all have their roles in the game. Even though Fomantis and Lurantis were somehow not bugs.
