I used to think Slugma was gen 3, but that's mainly because I never saw it anywhere while playing Crystal while Hoenn has it much more readily available.

In Emerald, Rival 2 will have a Slugma instead of Numel if you pick Mudkip at the start. That's probably what helped cement that misconception for me.

Darmanitan is gen 4.
Honchkrow is gen 5.

I don't even know why I mix darm and honch up. Must be the influence of too many hack roms that add mons of different gens.

I remember having caught one in that route south of blackthorne the first time I played Crystal version in 2001. This is one of the few Pokemon I see on here all the time that I have never been mistaken about.

I did the same thing because I was too impatient to wait on gold so I plays a bad English translation rom so i didnt really do muh exploring or anything i just rushed through it because the translations were so bad.. even pokemon names were translated wrong

I never played Crystal, only silver like three times.

After RSE I gave Crystal and go and holyfuck a Skarmory right there after Mahogany.

I played Silver on release but never even saw Skarmory until Hoenn.
It also has an angular, almost mechanical appearance whereas most Johto mons have rounded, naturalistic features.

For Spoink, I saw it plenty in Hoenn but it just looks like a gen 2 mon to me. Same with Grumpig.

I was on top of it for the first three generations and bought the guidebooks. By gen 4 I found guides on the internet that had guides to new mons. I've never forgotten a mon or failed to accurately place it to it's gen.
