it was this cave in frlg and emerald that you could get a bunch of gen 2 mons if you went to various events. those events were never held to my knowledge, though.

You're thinking of Altering Cave, Artisan Cave is the one in Emerald's Battle Frontier which has only Smeargle.

Had me hyped as shit as a kid. I didn't play Johto so I didn't figure to water the Sudowoodo for ages (I did figure it out on my own though?) and I'd been guessing what might've been in that cave

That was actually my favourite part of the Battle Frontier

It was weird yeah but I still remember so clearly when I first got into that cave.
Was at a sleepover at a friend's place and played Pokemon until like three AM woke up pretty early, randomly stumbled upon it and caught a bunch of Smeargles for some reason and then traded them to my friend for his actually rare Pokemon.
That place will always hold a special place in my heart.
