Idk, other monster series more often than not don't bring back a good portion of their games and majority of them have better visual fidelity than pokemon.

Do you think that not bringing back everything would have been a better decision overall from gen to gen?

Do you have any idea how pissed people would get if they got the newest game and discovered they weren't allowed to use their favorite ever again because GameFreak arbitrarily decided to cut them from the roster? You can joke all you want about how you wouldn't miss your most hated 'mon, but someone, somewhere, considers it their favorite, and they'd feel alienated. Every Pokemon in the series has its fans, and what you're suggesting to do is essentially tell them to fuck off. There is no way that this would be a positive change overall. GameFreak would get nasty letters detailing how people aren't going to bother with the games again because some jackass got the bright idea to cut Pokemon from the games for no reason other than "numbers bloat," which isn't even an issue to the vast majority of the playerbase.

I agree. My girlfriend adores Sawsbuck, Boufalant, and Aimbipom. I adore Chesnaught, Cofagrigus, and Barbacle. These mon are definately not the most popular. But they're not filler.

This is the only part of your statement that is wrong. Look at all the fucking normies out there man. They outweigh the dedicated fans and the normies can't handle the idea of hold items or there being more than 151 pokemon. The number bloat is an issue for less dedicated fans and the type of people who say Dark Souls and Sekiro need an Easy Mode because completing the Pokedex has become too difficult in their eyes.
Keeping the Pokemon definitely outweighs the benefits of cutting them though and as the OP mentioned, it differentiates Pokemon from a lot of the other monster series out there.

I think it would've worked out better in the long run because any bad ideas could be changed or removed without worrying about breaking something else. Currently here's so much unnecessary baggage in the games that removing an old item or evolution method might break the whole game in general.

If what you say is true, Lets Go should have broken every sales record possible. Intead, it sold about as expected from a remake, because even with all the culling it did, nobody but the dedicated fanbase bought it.
