Here's the correct way of playing pokeman:

>pick the starter that gives your rival the strongest starter
>box the little shit as soon as possible
>catch shitmons
>after catching a shitmon, edit its stats in a save editor
>give it 0 IVS, a neutral nature and a 85 EV spread
>ban inbattle items and disable pokemon switching

The problem is that several HM moves are very weak or same type. GSC/HGSS alone had Surf, Waterfall and Whirpool, three Water-type moves that most of the time would go to your water Pokemon, which limited the coverage moves they could have. Poor red Gyarados most of the time had to be turned into an HM slave for that reason.

Probably. My current Platinum team is Torterra, Empoleon, Gliscor, Bronzong, Chimecho, and Magnezone. Ultra Moon was Primerina, Gastrodon, Butterfree, Forretress, Alolan Persian, and Tentacruel.

It was my first team, but even now I just pick Pokemon that I like when I play the game I'm not concerned about types or how good a Pokemon is. Main game is usually so easy you really don't need to worry.

You have to catch the legendary but I think you can store it if you have a full party already. I remember looking it up when going for a Ghost monotype run of Black version, but I didn't finish the challenge so I could be wrong about needing it for battle.

This is fine in gen 1 since there's only 4 that you actually need to learn and overall they round out to be really decent (Flash is entirely optional getting through Rock Tunnel without it is really easy) but gen 2, 3, and 4 were just overboard. 5 and 6 thankfully dialed it back down but by that point the original moves were really outdated.

I think the only games I fell into that were Sapphire and Diamond. With gen 1 and 2 my starter was overleveled but I really enjoyed grinding and managing my team so everyone stayed on a pretty decent level. Sapphire however I had fallen out of Pokemon when I got it for my birthday so I just kind of blazed through it with a Swampert. I don't know why my Diamond team was such dogshit but my Rapidash was the overleveled one there not my starter. I pretty much relied on it and Starraptor for most the entire game. The other members of my party were Infernape, a really underleveled Muk, and then I switched two shitmons out for Azelf, and Dialga. Platinum was a far more balanced team and I pretty much had to re-teach myself the game. First time I ever relied on an HM slave.

I like to keep my pokemon in a close level range and my team thematically built instead of just having one or two strong ones that do all of the work.
