You can start in Pallet Town or New Bark Town and you've got a pretty good selection of starters to choose from. /vp/ being the hyperbolic autists they are like to make the game seem like a shitfest because of the developer cameo battles and a new Elite 4, but really it's fine. The only problems is that you can't start in any other town and the wild Pokemon don't scale to your level, so you could steamroll the first few gyms if you get lucky and catch something a few levels higher than the rest of your team.
