The annoying thing about digimon is that there's just enough variants of mons you like or alternate evolution paths for old mons that it tricks you into thinking there's this huge, elaborate and well thought out evolution tree for the whole thing... and then you discover most digimon don't even have evolution lines or they just abruptly end early.

Disagree, because it's not always clear design wise. If I would know little about Pokémon forms/evolutions I would thought that Mega Heracross or Mega Banette are evolutions of Her across and Banette not because they look really different from original designs.
Same I can say about Alolan Exeggutor and Exeggutor or Hoops and it's bigger form.
You can also easily be tricked to think that Melmetal is just another form of Meltan not an evolution, a separate species.
It's even more confusing with dawn and midnight forms, I didn't that they are form differences I would think that they are alternate evolutions.
Or Gallade and Gardevoir.

I love Digimon, but I always found it how digivolution lines could also sometimes wildly differ between games. There's no real consistency in the series, and I honestly wouldn't mind some sort of soft reboot or some effort to establish a more definitive digivolution chart.

"Regional variants" (recolour Digimon) only exist due to the limitations of Digimon World.
The recolours (ModokiBetamon, RedVegiemon, Dokunemon etc.) are the ones you can't recruit or obtain, while their normal colours are the ones you can.
The obtainable Digimon are the ones from the first 4 V-Pets, with MegaSeadramon, Phoenixmon and HerculesKabuterimon and many non-recolour non-obtainables (Gotsumon, Tentomon etc.) being from the Pendulum series which mostly came out after the game had been released.
