For me, it was bad eggs. I remember when I was a kid (around 8) playing the 3rd gen when I heard of bad eggs for the first time. Among them were all these reports of glitches randomly turning Pokemon into them and then it spreading like a virus. Scared the shit out of me as a kid that my pokemon could be turned into one of those and I always avoided shit like
>catching pokemon with a full party
>leaving eggs in the PC
>looking at eggs before they hatch
>other random shit I heard caused it
for all of the 3rd generation and 4th generation
