Is that seriously what happened? Near the end of SM it feels like the devs regretted for her being a villain and stopped, and then completely reversed course in USUM. What the hell was that?

Development waifuism: a case of writers/directors becoming too intimately attached to a character, leading to them compromising or rewriting their project in order to not besmirch the character's image. A common occurrence for female villains.

They redeemed her so that they can use her again in the future. If she stayed a crazy villain, it'd be hard to incorporate her in the future. It also allows them to add Lillie in the future without tying her or Gladion down to their mother.

The conflict is simply less centred around Lillie, and as such Lusamine has a less developed role.

I can take or leave the fact she was redeemed, the issue I think is how half-assed the whole thing. It's essentially just a speech from Lillie, a standard boss battle, and everything is on the mend. Even a bit of extra exposition on Nihilego would have made the world of difference.

I remember first seeing that and nearly shitting my pants.
Even though we've literally faced gods in this franchise before, seeing Ultra Lusamine made you feel like you were standing up against a truly terrifying monster.

Does this shit make more sense if you played Sun / Moon first? Especially Gladion, why would Team Skull need an "enforcer" or whatever when their most ambitious project was trying to steal a bus stop? Why couldn't Nanu actually be a responsible adult and try to reach out to all these kids in desperate need of a father figure? Why is Alola so fucked? This is probably the most depressing game in the series, there's no fucking hope for anyone. Fail your island challenge and good fucking luck even becoming a janitor or garbage man unless your dad already works there.

USUM story as a whole is much worse and messier than SM's. SM was tightly focused on Lilly and Lusamine, so much you could argue Lilly was the protagonist and the player was simply her lapdog. GF being GF they couldn't let a good thing stay and had to "fix" it by giving us the clusterfuck that is USUM's storyline. It's an objective downgrade.

To a degree. Team Skull has more reason to be working with the Aether Foundation, and Gladion's whole situation makes at least some sense. The main fixes are with Lillie and Lusamine though.

Also, I always figured that the island challenge was either supposed to be fairly easy or the sort of thing that you didnt need to entirely finish in order to succeed. It's more headcanon, but the region is a little less shirty when you assume that simply giving an earnest effort is enough to pass, and that Team Skull is just those who either didn't try or did something awful enough during a trial to get them disqualified.
