All of them were fun as far as I can remember. Never played the original but I played Almia and Signs. Those were both really fun.

I've only played the first and second, but I heard good reviews about the 3rd. Overall, incredibility fun. Different from the main series but you get over that pretty quickly. A lot more emphasis on exploration, which is a great thing. One of the coolest things about the ranger games is how you actually get to see pokemon out and about and use their abilities to complete various tasks.

Very underrated series, and sadly, will probably not return on the switch due to a lack of second screen. If it does return, I'd expect some big gameplay changes

Never played the original but I loved both of those. The only thing I didn't like was Guardian Sign's past temple multiplayer thing. It was way too hard for kid me to beat alone. But at least it had great soaring mechanics that somehow outclass ORAS's

Side games always get calm discussions because only people who like them buy them, so there's no risk of disappointment like with main games which cater to a larger audience

Just started playing Shadows yesterday. It's my first Ranger game and I haven't played much beyond the school section yet, but I'm enjoying it.

I forgot Shadows had that long school tutorial section. I think I remember people bitching about it so it's a good thing you're playing that first, makes it more tolerabe in my opinion

Certainly did for me, although I can see it being a massive pain in the arse if you've played the game before. On the level of the Melemele Trainer's school portion if not worse. At least your classmates are likable and it does serve its purpose well as a tutorial. I'm also told that Almia is just a better game overall than its predecessor and improves it in a number of ways, so it's probably the best one to start with anyway.

What I like about the Ranger games is the cast of characters and setting. They always seem to have a lot more personality than the mainline games. Even the sprites are expressive.
We will never have a game using Ranger graphics

They're a lot of fun, and I really wish they made more. The Pokemon acting in real time really brings them to life, and the sprite work is clean. It can be a little disappointing since not every single Pokemon is in them, but overall it's got a nice presentation.

I think it's that and people just expect more from the core games. I've been disappointed in the content for gens 6 and 7, but I still actively love the side games. I ironically find more replay value in something like PMD than most of the mainline games.

The second's story was great in graduating ranger school, going to work, and coming back and talking with your friends at night. I remember it being comfy.

Only played the first one. The core mechanic is repetition but with enough challenge and variety to keep it weirdly engaging and cathartic. That and the story actually kept me invested. Real gem

Second best side series.

If it weren't for the explorers games being so far up there, they'd actually be the best side series for actually having gotten better as games with each new entry (though I like SoA the most personally).

Not true, and it doesn't add anything worthwhile to the game. In fact, it might even be detrimental since it makes some Pokémon easier to find.

Despite all that, GtI still has a lot of major improvements and great ideas they never expanded on.

Enlisting Pokemon to solve local and environmental problems was such a wholesome experience.

Shadows of Almia was probably my favorite. Styler mechanics were improved, partners were more varied, and I even loved the whole Ranger school thing. It was rewarding to see your classmates show up in the field during the mid-game when you joined the Union.
