They erected a whole "they're bad pokemon designs but they're not pokemon so they're good designs" defense that can basically be used to excuse literally anything.
Captain Underpants could be a Pokemon and any criticism could be deflected with "nuh uh uh, he's not SUPPOSED to be a Pokemon", and that would be a valid defense.

They're also all lazy "I got a kill so I get to sweep your whole team" sweepmons aside from Celesteela (defensive sets only) and Guzzlord (in higher tiers only).

I love these eldritch abominations, with their crazy stats and wild designs. They're one of the few things that I liked about SM, and I wish that more time was spent on their dimension instead of babysitting Lillie.

I think they're kind of a missed opportunity and end up just being an excuse for weird designs (I like weird designs so I'm overall ok with it but still feels like a lot of hype for nothing).
I still think it would've been cooler if they weren't catchable Pokemon but used as boss fights with stats a legal Pokemon could never have that actually make them pose a challenge

I hate it when people do this. Genuinely the most retarded defense to jump to.
If person A says they're bad, why not actually debate them on the design aspects? Don't just pull that "hurr not Pokemon" card out, because that's blatantly untrue. I've defended these things to the death and I've never once gone "bruh they're not Pokemon" or "they're aliens so it's fine."

sure, you could combine them with an upgraded totem system to achieve basically that.

but i mean it just seemed like a much more holistic solution to introduce these things as specifically-not-pokemon to be able to have monsters that can serve that purpose of creating challenging roadblocks in-game. it seemed to me like a very elegant solution that also meshed well with rethinking the formula and removal of gyms etc.

now to me they just seem kind of there. they're these cool weird extradimensional pokemon... and i'm not sure we'll ever see more of them with GF's track record of abandoning concepts like this, and that is fairly cool, but it just feels kinda half-baked to me in comparison

I like the idea of them being boss monsters. Those early scans made it seem like they were going to be something other than Pokemon (they didn't have the usual data, like Typing, Dex no., etc).

It's weird to me that they'll eat your snacks and play with you like any other Pokemon, when they're specifically designed to be irregular.

Trying to run a defensive Nihilego is going to blow up in your face because of a lack of recovery, defensive options, and a poor defensive type. Equip your clay/sash and just get what you can onto the field. It's an awful screen setter.

They're shit on a conceptual level. If they were just normal Pokemon I'd dislike a couple of the designs, but I wouldn't be irritated that they exist. A bundle of extra-dimensional pokemon-but-not-really that came with some godawful writing that will just be ignored in later gens and are functionally "legendaries" with overpowered stats, stupid capture methods, and genderlessness, weren't a welcome addition to the series for me. UBs are a garbage addition to the lore of a series that has so much unrealized potential.

Even the devs say "they're just Pokemon." Whats wrong with the writing for them? SM and USUM have total shit writing but the UBs themselves have decently fleshed out biology and their own ecosystems that show their growth and role in the environment rather than just having them morph like other Pokemon when they evolve. They have better writing than most special (and by that I mean unbreedables) Pokemon do.

I did like them because they're not weird enough. After Nihelego I thought they were all going to have appearances that misled you on what type they were along with weird alien biology to go with it. Instead we just got weird designs with mostly sensible typings. Nothing as weird as a jellyfish that's actually made of toxic glass.

This is why I wish Xurkitree was Electric/Grass. It doesn't look like a plant at first glance but then when you know its lore it would make sense, similar to Nihilego. Celesteela and Kartana's typing through me for a loop, though.

It's less so in other languages, like in German it's Kaguron. I guess that vaguely hints to it (Kaguya+Iron, but it's less easy to tell that it's iron from just "on"), but not as explicitly as CeleSTEELa.

All of these previously existing creatures are Pokemon and they're just about as "alien" looking as the Ultra Beasts are, if not slightly more. Honestly, if you ask me, a good number of the Ultra Beasts would be right at home as one of the "weirder" looking "regular" Pokemon. That probably calls into question whether or not they should be only SLIGHTLY weirder or all-the-way weirder, but I guess that part is a little more subjective.

That's the damn point you brainlet. They even said that they'd use the opportunity to make paradoxical designs that otherwise wouldn't be able to fit the typical "Pokemon" build. Glass jellyfish, gigantic muscle mosquito, a beautiful cockroach, an artificial tree, etc. They're all designed with that contradiction in mind, which actually makes them fucking brilliant. If they make you feel uneasy because they betray your expectations, then you fell for the trap.
