Honestly I don't mind when the roadblocks require the player to explore or do some side objective, when they're not directly part of the progression of the gyms. That's why I don't mind the Guards for Saffron City because you don't need to beat Erika and Koga to get the Tea for the Guards. I wish the other games would let you progress a bit further ahead if you go out of your way to explore instead of just holding your hand making sure you can't accidentally get lost by only introducing one or two new locations at a time before cutting the player off. Hell even Gen 1 did this with stuff like Pewter City.

Yeah, but if the swarm wasnt there, the most you could do is wander through the fog, have nothing to do in Celestic town, and be unable to to any further due to the boulders in Mt. Coronet. It's a roadblock that doesn't even block off anything important.

The only well done roadblocks are bodies of water, and i dont mean some 4 tile wide river. Pokemon related ones are dumb because there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to just KO it or throw a ball at it, and NPC's are the lowest of the low

It would've been so immersive and world building if you had the option to find a secret entrance or sneak past him and battle a whole bunch of slightly tougher dark Pokemon that make use of the blackout conditions on your way through. Or an option to gain access to the area a tad earlier than usual by helping them find out what's causing the blackout and them turned back on. You could enter the power plant after a small investigation mission and discover some Muk or something ruining the power grid. GameFreak needs to learn how to RPG. Fuck!
