thats probably a dumb question but does restarting a cartridge increase you chances of finding rare things? I recently got pokerus on diamond and my first ever shiny on X both shortly after deleting my saves and restarting

Well, technically it depends. I think there was something fucked up with the Gen III cartridges that made it impossible to find shinies if some arbitrary thing didn't happen. I can't remember what exactly, but this isn't a problem in any of the games before or after those.

I've found plenty of shinies throughout all the various higher odd methods. Fish chains, SOS, Friend Safari, Wormholes, Masuda, whatever you want. They're all super easy to do and it makes them so much more common, so I say they hardly count.
Is it so bad to consider it unlucky to have never found a shiny at the standard odds even after almost 20 years? I don't even care for shinies, I just find it remarkable how it's never occured for me; especially considering how I have obtained Pokerus in more than half my playthroughs.

If you've encountered under 1000 pokemon per game, and only played one game per gen, not finding any shinies in the wild is plausible even after decades.
With older games the rates were lower, but if you sink any amount of time into the new ones past what's required to beat the game, it's not all that hard to get lucky. You could probably find one in a day, given that you play for 18 hours straight.

I shiny hunted a bit in AS. Before doing that, I found 2 normally in that run; zubat and oddish. The totadile birch gives after delta episode also was. Slighty peeved about that because the rayquaza and deoxys were shit natures.
That was actually an absurd run now that I think of it.

I intentionally don't farm shinies, because I don't want a shiny living dex to cheapen them and want only a handful of them, but when one day I explicitly said I wanted a shiny Dedenne and got to work breeding, it took 2 days.
