It used to be 500 power. The game said 250, but prior to Gen 5, it halved the opposing Pokemon's Defense when calculating damage.

Old Explosion was a bit dumb, but I think they overnerfed it.

That needs to happen. You're sacrificing your pokemon to take out a potential threat asap. It's pretty worthless now without the defence drops.
