Your Father is stepping down from Champion.
You both race to fight him before the other gets there to claim it for yourself.
The Evil Team has the same idea, sending one of their own to claim the throne as well, throwing traps at the two of you and causing shenanigans you have to solve in order to hold you up during your adventures. All just to seize control over the region as 'Champion'.

It simple. It makes sense. It sounds fun.

He's a new Pokemon trainer and new to the region, just like you, and he introduces himself by giving you 5 potions, saying he wants to be good friends with you. His dad is gone, so he lives with his mother alone, who decided to move to the new region. He's annoying, but nice. At least at first.
>Team
His team first consists of the same starter you chose, as he wants to use having the same Pokemon as a reason to be friends. He then catches a regional rodent, then a Zubat, and later on in the story he gets the signature Pokemon as the evil team, along with whichever legendary isn't the box art.
>Story
Each time you beat this guy, he gets a little more bitter. At first, he just laughs is off and congratulates you, but as time goes on he gets mad. So mad, in fact, that he joins the evil team because they promise him the power to beat you. He eventually rises through the ranks, becoming the boss' right hand man. Then, right before your confrontation with the boxart legendary, you see the evil leader at the bottom of the stairs, beaten. He says your rival betrayed him using the other legendary. The boxart legendary then comes to the bottom of the stairs, you fight it, and then the rival comes down wanting to challenge you once and for all, to see who's best. After you beat him again, he runs away, and he doesn't appear again til the post game of the next game, where he uses the evil teams Pokemon, his Golbat, and the regional rodent in the battle tower, or whatever it's equivalent is.

Your forgotten childood friend. You don't start in the same town, but met for the first time just before entering the first gim. >Backstory
The kid that was too late to get his starter Pokemon. He's the wimp everyone makes fun of for being too skiddish, but he wants to become someone strong everyone can respect. He is your best friend, but he sees you as a rival first- he isn't quite as annoying with it as Hau or Trace, I'd imagine he's more on the respect level Hugh had for you.

>Personality
Like I said, is a bit skiddish and wimpy at first. As the journey goes on, he builds up confidence until he's suddenly the talk of the region. Probably runs from Caterpies at first, and towards the climax he'd probably punch the bad guy himself.

>Partner Pokemon/Ace
It takes him a while to be a threat, he'd have a psuedo legendary for a starter that slowly evolves over time.

>No idea what his team would be
Just be very balanced, strong, and have a full roster, that is all I'd want. He might have a team that relies a lot on friendship and patience to evolve, and definitely would have a Mega somewhere. He wouldn't be a pushover like some rivals.

>Actions in the story
Literally goes from worst trainer to best trainer. You watch this guy go from bad to Chad over the course of the game. Probably becomes champion, but refuses to take the title officially unless he can defeat you- someone he probably respects more than the champion.

If you are the chosen one or whatever, he'd probably also be a chosen one just to balance it out between the two of you (So if you had Solgaleo, he'd have Lunala, just for an example). Definitely is one of the few to stand up to the evil team leader with you.

When you beat him at last, he's a bit down, but he's like. Really happy that he at least lost to the person he considers his best friend. He definitely will challenge you again, though.

>Battle Theme
Builds up. Silly at first battle, then normal, then really cool, then some kind of shonen final rival battle shit.

Thank god this thread isn't archived yet. Here's my idea for a more villainous type character that can act somewhat like a rival:

>Encounter villain rival right after getting your starter

>His face is covered with a helmet or a mask and he wears unique clothing/armor to make him mysterious and intimidating

>He forces you into a pokemon fight with him

>When you send out your tiny level 5 starter he sends out his huge level 50 pokemon

>Obviously his pokemon wrecks your starter

>After the battle he mocks you for your weakness and says you should give up on being a trainer before you blackout/rush to a pokemon center because the starter is badly hurt and could die from their recent beating

>This encounter motivates the player to train up a strong team so they can get revenge on him later

>He's mentioned and even shortly appears in a couple of scenes but you don't get to rematch him until around the climax. In one of these scenes you learn he's involved with the evil team

>In the rematch his pokemon are still tough but not horribly over leveled like last time

>After you win he's shocked but later gets over his loss and admits he's started to respect you for your perseverance. He's still not a good person but also not really a dick to you anymore

A dude who lives in the Orre region, mainly near the Gateon Port area. Really, he had a normal childhood... until the second Cipher incident that is. His father had a rare Pokemon that Cipher stole, and his Pokemon were too weak to handle Cipher's Shadow Pokemon. After that, he vowed to never have something happen like that again. So he trained in Mt. Battle and decided to head to another region and tackle the Pokemon League.

A goofball who tries his best and acts cooler than he really is. He's not really an asshole but he doesn't suck your dick, rather respecting your skill as a friend. He despises the evil team because of his experience with Cipher.

Armaldo and Cradily. They were given to him when he was a child and has loved 'em ever since. They're dorks like him.

The usual: You and him battle and he helps you out fighting against the evil team.
He assists you with the first battle against the second rival (Her Pokemon are several levels above yours).
After one battle he gives you a Flame Orb and sees it as a genuine gift from the heart. This is also the only time he gives an item after a battle.
His Armaldo and Cradily do stupid shit involving the evil team like shitty disguises and other stuff

Sounds like a decent villain, but not a rival. A rival should rival you, not surpass you by leaps and bounds. I think it'd work better if his Pokemon was closer to level 15 or 20. Still enough to trounce you, but not to the point where he just brutalizes you for shock value. It's a cool concept, though

And I just thought the over leveled thing would be a neat way to give most players a taste of their own medicine (like how you brutalize the pokemon of NPCs with over leveled pokes) by having them be on the receiving end.

Let's see. At first, something silly. Think of BW1's rival music with Cheren and Bianca, or Barry, maybe even Hau. Nothing too threatening, basically. First couple of fights where he's a real pushover.

After a couple of battles, you get normal music for a rival. Kind of consider something akin to May or Hugh.

Towards the last three gyms you might get something like Champion Blue or ORAS Wally.

The final fight? Idk, something akin to Zinnia? X and Y's E4 theme, maybe. Somehow combine it with something similar to Trinity from My Hero Academia in terms of tone.

This idea is for Sword and Shield; the hypothetical theme is "mastery", with different NPCs having different opinions on what it means to be a master. The antagonist wants to achieve mastery through force or manipulation, the rich kid rival thinks he can buy his way to success, etc. There are three "rival" characters: the rich kid whom it's satisfying to put in his place, the bossy know-it-all girl, and the klutzy, awkward kid who constantly gets picked on and starts out weak but becomes a major challenge later on.

Hot girl, slightly older-looking than the player avatar but claims she's his/her age. She seems to be known by most major NPCs (prof, older gym leaders, E4s, antagonist) but she will still claim she just started her journey alongside you. She will constantly ask for your opinions on things like what does it mean to have strength, friendship, if you like a certain vista, etc. She helps you defeat the evil team, and you even find a grunt who seems shellshocked over how strong she is, even if the team in her battles is on the weak side (think current gen generic bird, gen rat, gen pikaclone, etc). When you finally defeat the Elite Four, she's sitting in the champion throne. Now here's the cool part: She was the old champion, but to prove herself as a Trainer she resolved to box all her strong and start over. Depending on your answers to her questions all game, she either decides you are a worthy champion and fights you with her champion team, or that you lack maturity and fights you with post-game bullshit Uber mons and item spam.

>Backstory

You get your pokedex and you have to go on your journey, and everyone seems happy except one, your rival. He is a very weak and shy boy that you protect from bullies and is afraid of the outside world. You feel pitty towards him so you through the tutorial scene. You give him the first pokemon that you catch, an Azurril. He also picks the starter that has the type advantage and starts his own journey.

>Personality

Your rival starts shy and weak, but suddenly you notice with each battle he is becoming stronger and more confident, and you find him each time to test if you're ready for the gym until the 4th one, where he gives a defeat speech and leaves.

>Partner Pokemon/Ace

Basically the Azurril you gave him, except he doesnt evolve it until later in the game, so he keeps it a baby for a long time.

Azurril , Raltz , Snorunt , Espurr, Eevee and whatever starter has the type advantage over yours.

Later in the game, your friend is the actual champion and their team is all evolved into Azumarril , Gardevoir , Frosslass , Meowstic , Sylveon and last evolution of the starter.

Everything is pretty normal until the fight before the 4th gym where your rival leaves feeling defeated. You continue the game, and the "team of the season" causes glitches in the areas you can access with the HM you earned, causing them to change as if time was as if it was rewinded (and you get to catch some fossil pokemon too if you like). Your rival starts working alongside the evil team, and you fight him still with the weak non-evolved pokemon of the beginning. He gives you a speech about some bullshit of making nature go back to the times humans didnt contaminate and corrupt the planet and how evolution caused suffering. You defeat your rival and the evil team. Then you get your rival's speech about how your evolved pokemon helped you and how change could be good sometimes. You dont see your rival anymore, not until you defeat the champion, who happens to be a cute girl around your age with a familiar team of pokemon you saw before somewhere. After defeating her, she enters your pokemon list on the wall of fame and tells you "I will let you on a secret. I changed for good too and evolved my way". That's when you realize your rival became a girl.

He's meant to be just a friendly rival at first but later on he gets pulled into helping the villain team unknowingly. He's told that in order to save X person or whatever bullshit plot you need to summon the boxart legendary and he'll do anything to go with it. In the way he'll fight you thinking he's doing the right thing

After the whole bullshit legendary thing, he redeem himself by becoming the champion
>Battle Theme
The battle theme should be your usual comfy rival battle and stays at it is until later when he tries to stop you while thinking he's doing the right thing where his battle theme takes a sadder tune. When you fight him for the Champion theme, you get a blazing fucking nice theme

Sadly, the venus and mars symbols didnt remain after i posted so eh. Just keep in mind the azurril you gave the trainer was male, But then it changed during the game to female because devs wanted to keep it that way so i exploited it.
