Pokemon used to be about taming monsters and using them merely for the sport, not becoming their friends. That's why the player character was so strong and why the rival was quickly dethroned in RBY - the player didn't treat Pokemon as tools, but rather as partners.
Severe training methods like whips were swept under the rug by Gen 2, and by Gen 3, the Pokemon games became all sunshine and lollipops like it is today. The only exception are actual villain characters who see Pokemon as tools, but strict or abusive training is never really mentioned.

The only bad thing about this is how the player character becoming a prodigy through the "power of friendship" doesn't really make sense when it is now the norm. I can see why Gamefreak pushed for that, though.

Animal tamers never actually whipped the animals. The cracking sound of the whip was something they used to command large animals, much like dog trainers use clickers.

this was before pokemon became plastic cosplay animals mind you, they were powerful and dangerous creatures

Considering Pikachu as a Mascot as a whole has gone chubbier over the years, I think its think to whip it back into shape, literally?

Beta and concpets of gen 1 and early gen 2 really show that gen 1 during development was Tajiri's and Sugimori's passion project, not a typical soulless Nintendo game after 1990.

More like I'm against the Nintendo dominated Video Game industry that has plagued it during the 80s and this decade. I have only enjoyed entertainment when toxic global enterprises like Nintendo and Disney were failing in the 00s when actual quality emerged (Expect from gen 3 pokemon games).
