>>38233347It's good points, actually, speciallty the HM spam.
But those are things that aren't exclusive to GSC. The way Pokémon works, unfortunately it encourages soloing in every game, and if anything, the shitty learnsets of GSC encourages you to diversify your party, as there's barely a mon strong enough to you to win spamming A like other games. Soloing is still a tendency, though.
Pokémon distribution is anything but the worst. Playing again the game I realized how this game encourages you to non-linearity, specially with the phone calls. Almost every place you revisit will have something interesting, from a Berry you get agan, to a new area are you can now explore and catch new Pokémon. There's some nice different Pokémon you get rewarded if you do this, like Wobbufett, Lapras or Natu.
Kanto is a glorified bossrush, I agree with you, and I agree that the game was held on a pedestal for that. Replaying Kanto I saw how it's dissapointing and can be finished in like 30 minutes.
About the weak story, I think it's nice that they gave a "sequel" to the events of RBY, though it's still quite childish. Pesonally I don't think the story of the other games are much better, and from Gen 3 onwards it's always the same boring story of someone evil wanting a powerful Pokémon to rule the world. In some games this plot is done better than in others, though.
If you compare GSC to other games of the GBC (or GB), it feels like it's the best game you can get from a handheld system with that power, and I don't feel the same from many of the other games.
There's also of course the batch of things GSC brought to the franchise, like items, breeding, shinies, balls etc, which I think it's the best a Gen could add.
