I find one of the greatest weaknesses of Gen 6 and 7 was that due to them not being willing to gift the Player many Pokemon you end up with a lot of very powerful Pokemon appearing in the wild when they shouldn't and in Gen 7's case a lot of the new Pokemon being tedious and obscure to find even though many of them aren't actually very good.
I think in an optimal situation if you've got a Dex of 250 Pokemon, 125 New Pokemon, 125 Old Pokemon, now we'll take away 25 New Pokemon and 10 Old Pokemon to account for Starters, Fossils & Legendaries, so we've got 100:115, basically for this a balanced route would have 2 New Pokemon (i.e. of that current generation) for every ~2.3 Old Pokemon, we'll round that to 2 for every 2.5 since that's a nicer number. Even though I personally would like to see the value favour the New Pokemon way more I know Game Freak will never get to that point again so in terms of Old vs. New Pokemon on a Route according to the total number of Pokemon that Route (or Dungeon) you'd get this (in a case non-whole numbers we always favour the new Pokemon);
3 Pokemon = 2 New, 1 Old
4 Pokemon = 2 New, 2 Old
5 Pokemon = 3 New, 2 Old
6 Pokemon = 3 New, 3 Old
7 Pokemon = 4 New, 3 Old
8 Pokemon = 4 New, 4 Old
9 Pokemon = 4 New, 5 Old
10 Pokemon = 5 New, 5 Old
11 Pokemon = 5 New, 6 Old
12 Pokemon = 6 New, 6 Old
Those higher numbers would likely appear on Routes with Surfing & Fishing.
