Nothing, you just played it at an impressionable age. It was a tiny, empty region. The Johto Pokemon were few and far behind, and largely terrible or obsolete babies. Some were so poorly placed people still think they're Hoenn Pokemon. Gen II was one of the few outright bad Gens, it just a "right place in the right time" release.

Gen V is what people pretend Gen II was, they just can't bring themselves to admit it.

This may shock you, but not everyone cares that some Gen II Pokémon are only available in post-game Kanto. Nearly 200 Pokémon are technically available prior to the Pokémon League when that number was 149 in Gen I. I'll figure out the exact number and everything.

89/100 Gen II Pokémon can be obtained prior to beating the Pokémon League. The only Gen II Pokémon that can only be obtained post-game are

I also want to add that if the player uses the Time Capsule with a completed Gen I game, they could get the 18 Pokémon exclusive to Gen I, along with 11 post-League Pokémon (including Blissey), leaving only 10 Pokémon (all Gen II) for post-game. You could hypothetically have a Pokédex of 241/251 before the post-game if you really work at it.

No? It's even worse because you can't get Larvitar and Misdreavus until after you've beaten all the Kanto gyms too. There's absolutely nothing to use them for except Red. Real great game design though, huh?

Johto is the comfiest region because it has the best theme, music and pokemon designs.
it isnt so much about rushing through all the gyms and beating the elite 4 as it is really exploring and finding the new rare pokemon.
