The Gym Leaders could act as positive models for each side, Roark, Fantina, Maylene & Volkner being more tech orientated whilst Gardenia, Wake, Byron & Candice would be more traditionally orientated (this would be exemplified through sideplots involving Byron & Roark as well, Maylene & Candice).
Some interactions with the Elite Four prior to reaching the League would also be good, if we were to relegate say a quarter of the map to each E4 member to make appearances I think it would be; West for Lucian (due to Canalave Library), South for Bertha (due to the Great Marsh), East for Flint (it's already the case canonically) & North for Aaron (due to Eterna Forest). Unlike Flint's interactions in DPPt though these should be optional stuff, having the character outright talk to the player pretty much spoils them as E4 members and so having them be more hidden away from the main plot and major side plots I think would give the player incentive. Cynthia's fine I think as is, I feel we could've had a few more interactions with her if they were more evenly spaced out.
In terms of introducing an entirely new thing to the series, I think Sinnoh offers an interesting opportunity, aside from probably having some new Oceanic Routes that connect the entire West Coast together what would be interesting. The other addition I'd suggest is expanding on the Seabreak Path and making that another Post-Game area, have an entire post-game plot around Shaymin that involves Saturn, Dawn/Lucas & Prof. Rowan to contrast Stark Mountain.
