That's the point. Red is the poster-boy for "our bond is our strength" and friendship and all that. Blue is the trainer that represents what hard-work and determination can do. Blue just got too caught up in his rivalry with Red and that was his downfall.

Of course you can. The point of Red having a fully gifted team is to show that he sucks ass at catching, and probably actual battle tactics as well. I mean, look at this team. Its awful. Blue has actual strong Kanto Pokemon on his team like Exeggutor, Gyarados, and Alakazam. However, Red's considered the best trainer in the world. The only way someone that bad could be that victorious would be by having strong ties to his Pokemon.

very interesting metaphorical reading, perhaps that's what GF meant by it, but his superiority over Blue is that his Pokemon are far higher level. none of his mons even have return.

I get that what I typed is mostly headcanon, but Blue has a vastly superior team, so the only way Red can come out on top is anime ass-pull bullshit. Its like early gen Yugi beating Kaiba despite Dark Magician being vastly inferior to BEWD.

Exeggutor was by far the best Grass-type in Gen 1. The only reason anyone uses base Venusaur nowadays is Chlorophyll, which Red's doesn't have.

They just cramed as much shillmon they could into Red's team that's all and they did so because the previous player (you) were likely to have used some of them as well.

and
Pokemon : the game
Are two separate entities that almost never cross each others (Silver's crobat is a nice exception)

The reason Red has that team is because he is supposed to represent the player. The Pokemon in his team are the only ones the player is ‘guaranteed’ to obtain during their playthrough.

He used to have an Espeon in GS, not sure why they switched it to a Snorlax (probably to represent his anime/manga counterparts)

The only one I would say is the best at what it does is Venusaur. Arcanine can do the same thing as Charizard can and Blastoise is outclassed by the majority of Kanto's water types. Gyarados, Vaporeon, Starmie, Slowbro...

I like the idea, but I would argue that Blue could have the same relationship with his monster as Red by taking care of them and bring out the best in them during battle... If not for the fact Blue is a total asswipe..

This bugged me too. Lapras just seemed out of left field to me. What's the point of using Blastoise if you have Lapras...Espeon was a nice addition if for no other reason than just being a Gen II pokemon.

It would have been so cool if they had a thing at the start that allowed you to transfer all your Gen 1 pokemon into Gen 2 (with the pokemon being inaccessible until you beat the game, of course), and if they secretly put the team you most recently beat the Elite Four with in as Red's team. That would have been so cool.

Gen 1 starters were hot garbage back then except maybe Venusaur which was outclassed by Exeggutor and even Victreebell.
Charizard had nothing going for it; it was weak to Blizzard, Hydro Pump, Rock Slide and Thunderbolt, the most used moves outside Hyper Beam/EQ, and its stats were shit.
Blastoise was just bad all around.
