>>38234291Gen 4 OU is considered the most balanced and diverse metagame you can play. Plenty of variety in the viable Pokemon and nearly every playstyle is good.
Gen 3 is close to how good gen 4 is, but there's not nearly as much variety.
Gen 1 is fun but also has a bit too much luck to be taken seriously. The mechanics are awkward to learn (ex using agility while paralyzed, crits, wrap), teams are pretty much the same, and you can get fucked out of winning by freezes and bad RNG.
Gen 2 is great if you feel like spending an hour on each game. You can go 100+ turns without either player losing a Pokemon. It does have some variety of Pokemon choice outside of Snorlax being mandatory on every team.
Gen 5 isn't as bad as people often make it out to be, especially now that all the weathers have been balanced out. Weather control adds another layer of strategy to the game, very similar to the strategy that goes with hazard control. It's still pretty cancerous, but not nearly as bad as the next two gens.
Gen 6 is just gen 7 but not as bad.
If you want to play modern Pokemon, just play lower tiers.
