Gen 3 they tried to bring it back around, couldn't do it, gen sucked
Gen 4 they accepted that the big boom of Pokemon was long gone and made a pretty good gen with a great definitive version in Platinum and great Gen 2 remakes
Gen 5 they found that spark they couldn't achieve with 3. Unfortunately by now it was way too later to continue the glory of gen 1, that didn't stop them though, with them making Unova parallel Kanto in multiple ways. Excellent gen but came out when everyone was tired of Pokemon
Gen 6 brought back a lot of OG fans and for that alone it gets major points. You can argue that this mediocre gen put the series back on track with a new type, a new form of evolution and a new eeveelution. A lot of genwun pandering (in a way more obvious approach since the Unova/Kanto parallel didn't work). Overall brought the series back into the spotlight because KANTOOOOOOO
Gen 7 is roughly the same story as 6, but now people care a lot less because they blew their load with 6
