It's physically not possible for any product to recapture your youth so why fucking bother? Constant kantoooo pandering just makes GF look pathetic and desperate.

And to be honest, I'm okay with the games not being exactly like my childhood as long as they aren't soulless or complete cash grabs like Let's Go clearly was. I'd just like for them to put in some effort and I'm sure a lot of people agree with that. In hindsight, staying 2D, at least outside of battle, probably would have helped too. Pokemon has chasing gimmicks and advancing in half-measures for lack of time from they very beginning- and we have ALWAYS mocked it for that even as we play them fiendishly. Yeah, imo games should've stayed 2D. Something about those sprites just had so much character. In 3D it seems a bit empty desu. Imagine if Game Freak made another 2D game alongside the 3D ones nowadays. I'm sure it would be better than what we're getting now. I don't hate the 3D games though, they're just not up to the standard of the other games. 3D models can't really be a selling point, it feels like they're trying to rely on that and slack in other areas, like mythicals etc... But knowing Game Freak a new 2D game would never happen, they'd have to create new sprites from the ground up for effectively 3 dex worths of Pokemon, also if they can get an easy cash grab by repackaging the same game, then why go out of your way to do this. I see everyone complain about "Oh Game Freak this, Game Freak that" but at the end of the day those are the same people going out to buy those games still. The only way to communicate a message is to cut their profits, and when they see less money going into their pockets maybe then they'll get the message. Imo Pokemon also needs more competitors. Yokai Watch died down a bit after the intial hype but the new game seems to be shaping up well and may give Sword and Shield a run for it's money Competition drives innovation!

I wish bro, I wish. But the sprites in the overworld were just as important to me. I can't see it happening. Ngl I don't even mind grid based games, free movement isn't that crazy in Pokemon. It gave it some unique charm. Someone should start a petition asking Game Freak to start making sprite-based games again. Not that it would make a change at all. Would just be good to gauge how many miss the old sprites and get the message across to GF. They're just gonna keep recycling the same old bland 3D models for the next games and not even change the poses as well.

before pokemon came out in the west, they briefly considered having steet muralists redesign the whole kanto dex to make it look edgier because they were worried the original designs wouldn't be marketable outside of japan.
pokemania was one of the biggest consumerist fads in recent memory.
genwun was 100% a corporate product and the only reason why people refuse to admit it is because of nostalgia.

technically, that does apply to pokemon. game freak didn't originally see themselves continuing the series past gen 2.
the pokemania fad coming to an end is what motivated them to keep it going. they decided that they wanted to prove to everyone that the concept still had legs.

The profit motive was never the issue to me, because even in the "best" case the timeframe of Pokemon going from a passion project to monster hit was very small, so much that Gen 1 could have failed, while the rest of the series rests so often on Gen 1's laurels. But of course, Pokemania would have to be the more "tactless" of the two to leave that kind legacy, wouldn't it?
