They should just make an alternative to having to trade to evolve. They could make it reasonably harder to encourage trading, but still doable within a normal in-game run, not needing to be done post-game or anything.

Trade evos are great as are version exclusive Pokémon. Me and my brother always got the opposite versions of each game and could trade at basically any time. Although I almost always traded with friends in school. Bring your gameboy in your lunchbox and do some trading and battling during recess.
