It felt like you were going on your own adventure and you just happened to be in the right place at the right time when it came to stopping Team Rocket. The later games just spend the entire game making you feel like a chosen one and it ironically makes your achievements seem less great.
I also prefered how legendary Pokemon used to be hidden "bosses" at the end of their own dungeon with their own backstory and you had to be go out of your way to hunt them down to capture them. Now they're just major plot devices that become compulsory to beat the game. Even though gen 3 started this trend, the Regis were at least locked away pretty nicely and it really felt like you were uncovering ancient secrets in order to find them.
