>>38252925What theory?
>>38251662They didn't, roguelikes originated in the west with the original Rogue and the following games. I like to say that they (or more specifically, Chunsoft) invented Japanese roguelikes, that is, roguelikes with strong JRPG influences. Makes a lot of sense considering Chunsoft are the creators of Dragon Quest and MD originated as a Dragon Quest spinoff. Notice the attention to graphics, music, lore, story, side stories, progression. Some of these things are very uncommon in western games, progression may even seem against the roguelike concept, particularly the way PMD implemented it, since, level reset dungeons aside, it's pretty much a roguelike that plays like a regular JRPG. Of course, there are lots and lots of Japanese roguelikes that followed the Mystery Dungeon ideas.
>>38250844Western PMD fans obsess way too much over the story, and a lot of the more common opinions don't even make a lot of sense, like how people who likely don't even know the story of Gates to Infinity hate on it based on other aspects of the game, or how they insist the gameplay should be action or open world or whatever, or how they come up with criticism that could very well be applied to the single player of the main games, and yet they seem to think "repetitiveness" is a problem in PMD but not in the main games, even though both can be dumbed down to nothing but selecting the same moves over and over if you don't go out of your way to challenge yourself with postgame content or self-restrictions.
But please don't say that all western fans are like that. Not only it's not entirely true, but you'll also reinforce the idea.
