Your realistic choices (based on popularity) are Singles OU and Doubles VGC, and they both suck.
Singles is garbage because single battles have been made irrelevant since Gen V and it's only become worse with the addition of mega evolutions and high level OU battles that aren't decided the second you see the team preview wind up no different from high stakes poker games, you're just trying to predict switchins and bait moves 80% of the time.
VGC is better in theory because it's doubles, which allows for very flexible team building and strategies, but they buttfuck it by limiting it to the current cartridge generation and having a legendary allowance, so everyone winds up building around a team comprising of the same legendary/complimental pokemon anyways.
