I did once.
Venusaur = Big Bud (because of the dude weed lmao strain and he's a big bud)
Shiny Gyarados = Bissmarckx (Biss = bite in German = bitemarks + Marx and Bissmarck because he's red and like a big ship)
Graveler/Golem = Rockwell (because of the Rockwell scale and he rocks well)

when I was like 9/10 I had a copy of pokemon ruby (my original copy) in which every pokemon i caught, without exception, was named "KILLER" In all caps. I never beat that copy, I ended up losing it, but boy was I a dumb kid. I think that's worse than just not nicknaming them

the problem with comparing pokemon to real life pets like cats and dogs is that real life animals have observable differences. you'll have a kitten that looks a bit like a lion so you'll name him leo, a puppy that likes to playfully "attack" everyone so you'll name him killer, a fully grey kitten so you'll name her smoky, or you get a japanese dog so you'll name her inu. you don't have that with the pokemon games
