>>38254204I've developed my brainchild region a lot since I last posted, so it's time to sperg out.
You (the protagonist) are an orphaned child living at the Memoria Orphanage with fellow orphaned siblings Avery and Alicia, the former being your rival throughout the game. He has already received his stater Piplup (picked because Empoleon is based and also takes 1x from all three main types since you get to pick any starter) from the professor in the neighboring town. He's competitive and can be a little bit intense and brash, but is ultimately a good and honest person.
His goal is to become the strongest Trainer in the region, which he is quite passionate about. After your first few victories over him, he becomes jealous of you and your exceptional talent at raising Pokemon. This causes him to train even harder, but it also starts him down a bit of a darker road, especially once he befriends Lucius, an admin of Team Icarus in disguise, who is able to win Avery over by appealing to his desire to seek greater strength. Lucius also gives him a Larvitar egg.
Much later on, Avery finds that he is able to sympathize with Team Icarus' supposed goal of "drawing out the strength of people and Pokemon." While he never officially joins, he fights you (albeit somewhat reluctantly) alongside Lucius in a double battle during Team Icarus' evil plan. After the battle, Lucius (who is actually a sorta cool dude after all) realizes Avery's hesitation and urges him to abandon Team Icarus and their machinations and to seek his ideal strength before giving him his Accelgor to keep and fucking off.
Avery meets you before challenging Victory Road, apologizing for all of his antagonism, vowing to show his new resolve before proposing one last competition to see who can make it to the top of the Pokemon League first. He does, beating the Champion just before you arrive, and so the final battle commences.
