>pick up 3ds, start the game
>see Kukui's face
>immediately flooded with memories of the 6 hour long tutorial and back to back cutscenes with little to no downtime inbetween
>all desire to replay the game completely destroyed
>put down 3ds and play something else

I've never gotten far in SM because of all the company and hand holding. Does USUM do it better or more of the same?

Pokemon has always been a one and done game. If they wanted you to replay it, there'd be multiple save files or New Game+. The main game is just how you build your team.

The fights are harder and the story takes a different turn and there are more pokemon, but the handholding and obnoxious cutscenes are about the same

you people seriously exaggerate the length of the cutscenes in these games, it's like none of you have ever played a plot-heavy JRPG before. I found moon's intro to be fairly brisk.

Well to be fair, the pokemon games used to have a pretty minimal amount of cutscenes in them that oonly grew longer, so people hold pokemon to a different standard.
Plus, the cutscenes aren't so much about you as they are about the NPCs. Not for the newer games, anyways.

It's worse, actually. There are story changes, but they don't really happen until really late. So you're running through almost the exact same shit that happened in SM, except now you have the Ultra Recon Squad yapping at you after some cutscenes.

It took me more than six months to get through Ultra Sun just because the endless cutscenes kept putting me off. All Gamefreak had to do was make a skip scene feature, but they fucking didn't and I'm honestly afraid gen VIII will be more of the same.

Sadly I think that's become more true, given the development that Gen 1-3 went through I feel that it was never the intention for them to go that way and they probably did want to include multiple saves, Gen 4-5 they seem to go through that phase of wanting to make really grand stories so replay-ability takes a backseat in that sense. The weird thing is that Gen 6 seems like it's the kind of game that would be built for replaying and multiple saves, it contains the most Pokemon in its regional dex of any game and has a very hands-off story, but when that story rears its ugly head it feels like it tries to grasp at the tassels of Gen 4 & 5 practically destroying the greater replay value of the games. Gen 7 seems to just not bother with anything and acts more as the game for the merchandise only really being there it to market the Pokemon, the last flame of that storytelling group seems to have been snuffed out with USUM.

Gen VII was shit all around.

So then why did you say something so blatantly incorrect? The first island is fucking miles better in USUM, in addition to offering more content like the trainer school's night stuff and a move tutor. USUM shits all over SM with regards to the opening island.

It's like you didn't even read the rest of my post. Fuck, USUM even ADDS a tutorial for the shitty surf minigame.

If USUM really did the main story better at all, it sure as hell wasn't by any noticeable metric. They should have given us a cutscene skip feature, or something.

No, I did, it was just stupid. If you think the USUM first island wasn't improved from SM by a vast fucking degree, go turn on both games right now and play until you can get your starter. Let me know how that goes.

If you said "islands 2 and 3 are basically the same just with URS shit" I would have agreed. But you had to say something completely incorrect and stupid. If USUM's whole game had the effort that islands 1 and 4 had, it would be a much better experience.

USUM as a game has enraged me more than any other game to date, out of sheer frustration for not being allowed to go on my fucking way. I did not enjoy being forced to stop and go to the shitty trainer school, or forced to stop and try out the shitty surfing minigame, or forced to stop and try out shitty battle royal, or any of the other stupid, pointless diversions that kept me from finishing the fucking the shitshow of a story and getting to the real meat of the game. And don't get me started on the Rainbow Rocket bullshit, all I wanted to do was get to the Battle Tree for endgame shit, and that piece of shit game shoved the RR bullshit right down my throat. At least the Looker shit in gen VI was totally optional.

I hate Alola, anon, do you understand me? I fucking LOATHE it. I'll be glad to leave it behind, and I pray to god SS doesn't repeat the same endless string of bullshit, or at least gives us a fucking cutscene skip.

See, your problem is you've let your issues with the game turn you into a chimp blinded by your own biases. While I had issues with gen 7 I'm able to step back and look at the objective improvements between the two titles. No cutscene skip or fast forward is annoying but the way you're whining about it? Just don't play either gen 7 game at that point, because your opinions on the actual content are clearly lacking.

That's not even my ONLY complaint, it's just the biggest by far. Lots of little shit that bother me about USUM, shit that's in SM as well, because it's mostly flaws about gen VII as a whole. Almost like the entire design philosophy behind the gen is the problem!

But you know what is unique to USUM that really gets me? I just know I'm going to catch so much shit for bringing this up, but by god fuck whoever at GF thought that Ultra Wormhole legendaries should be APPROACHED to be encountered, instead of just having them waiting there for you like most. This wouldn't be so bad if the game's movement were grid-based like some hate so much, but thanks to 100% analogue movement, it makes RNG abusing those legendaries a huge fucking pain. It's so goddamn inconsistent just for movement alone.

Also fuck the shiny locks in these games. I know every game since gen V has done that shit, but it's cancer.

The improvements made to Melemele Island are outweighed by how bad Rainbow Rocket and the plot being made worse due to Lusamine's motivations being completely fucked with are in my opinion. None of the new additions have any meaningful staying power either. The game is worse off overall vs SM.
