I guess some designs lend themselves to look favorable in a realistic setting while others don’t.

Torterra is pretty much a turtle with a tree on it’s back so there’s not much to account for in terms of fitting in.

This. Before the trailers, no one in the world unironically thought that a Pokémon live action would look good.

Sure, some of the designs look weird or creepy, but overall they've done a good job on making realistic Pokemon.

For the most part it's the designs with big cartoon eyes being done in the realistic style that tend to be weaker.

In part, some Pokémon were never supposed to be realistic, so it's expected they'd look weird. But i agree, those that are too fluffy and have big eyes look more creepy than cute, and more like a doll than like a living creature.

I can get over the eyes, as I don't even look twice at Jigglypuff anymore, but I don't think I'll get over the Pokémon whose proportions overall can't be salvaged in a realistic setting and also have nothing to distract from that fact. Loudred, for example, looks horrendous and despite people being put off by Pokémon having fur, that would have helped it so it would have more for people to focus on other than its odd proportions, playdough-like skin, and creepy face. It is a monster though, so I can't say it's entirely out of place.
