Only useful in Yellow, Nidoran won't learn anything useful in Red or Blue until level 43 and Mankey doesn't exist on that route until Yellow.

Grinding was really bad in the early games so it didn't seem like it encouraged you to actually grind anything else when an overlevelled starter could do almost everything. I picked Squirtle and just demolished everything.

Fuck, now I gotta play through RB again. Last time I did a mono-Blue run, using only Blastoise+exclusives, looked like this:
Blastoise
Persian
Sandslash
Ninetales
Victreebel
Pinsir

Actually worked really well. Would try it again with Red but that gives me a choice of:
Charizard
Arbok
Vileplume
Primeape
Arcanine
Electabuzz
Scyther

I guess I'd use all but Arcanine, but not having Surf is gonna be a problem.

So I've got this massive pile of cash.
