>>3827005135+ year olds didn't grow up with Pokemon, dude. Do the math. They don't even understand it (just watch gaming journalists in that age range. Most get triggered if you mention Pokemon).
That's why it doesn't make sense to mix 80s aesthetics and Pokemon. It's a product of the (late) 90s and the 35+ years old nostalgia fags grew up mostly in the 80s/early 90s. They are dwelling in their 80s pop culture, want to see star wars, iron giant and back to the future while listening to 80s pop. Not Pokemon. And the people who DID grow up with Pokemon (25-30 years old AT MAX) are "90s kids" who have a hard on for saturday morning cartoons, eurodance and 2d disney movies. They don't care for laser aesthetics 80s stuff, since it was the uncoolest thing during the 90s.
It's the younger millenials, the biggest target demographic for cheap popcorn movies, who romanticize the neon colors and exaggerated fashion of the 80s, since they grew up with media MADE BY 35+ year old 80s kids who at the moment control creative media, thus the current zeitgeist. Guardians of the Galaxy, Ready Player One and the Star Wars remakes are the result of that.
The Detective Pikachu movie obviously wants to attract those 15-20 year old hipsters, so they use the latest formula for a successful movie: latest nerdy trend (in this case Pokemon), 4th wall breaking, 80s references and inept comedy.
And it's utterly stupid, because it doesn't make sense. The 80s kids don't care and the 90s kids know it doesn't fit and that it makes no sense. It is only the 2000s hipsters who think "LOL POKEMON I'm such a nerd it's so retro laser optic and 80s music so cool"
... but there will come a time when the "90s kids" fully take over the movie and video game industry, for better or worse. And when the time comes, get ready for countless remakes of then popular media, Nintendo 64/PS1 style games and Vengaboys.
