I just found out that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were essentially the "third versions" of gen 7.
I never played any of gen 7 and I always thought it was a sequel (a la BW2), not a premium edition like emerald and platinum.
That being said, I am thinking about getting one of the gen 7 games to finally get around to playing. Is it worth getting both, or would one suffice (and if so: is the ultra version better/what are the differences?)

Sadly there's no correct answer.
Gameplay is better in Ultra.
Story is better in the originals.
Some stuff is different and worth seeing in both games (like the Anabel story and Rainbow Rocket) but mostly they are the same.

I say pick USUM and skip SM.

There are more side quests and the bosses are more challenging. But the story is worse. Otherwise there are no real differences. It's not as vital as an improvement as Emerald and Platinum were.

The ultra versions have a handful of more pokémon + all of Necrozma's formes. That's it. That's the "premium".

The changes to the story actually make it objectively worse and nonsensical, full of loopholes. That ain't no premium m8.

If you care about the newest mons or online get USUM. Otherwise SM is the exact same game and you can get it cheaper.

It's not worth getting a Gen VII game. USUM are regarded better than SM in just about every regard but story, but even then it's like comparing a turd to a turd with sprinkles.

What you need to ask yourself are these:
>Do I play JRPGs other than Pokémon?
>What aspects of the Pokémon franchise do I value the most?
>Is the mere presence of Pokémon and its characters enough for me to enjoy a game?

Yeah. Lusamine acts the same way as in SM for 90% of the game but with a completely different objective which doesn't make any sense. Why are there still frozen Pokemon in her room?

Not only that but I heard they kept a few dialogues that don't make sense anymore with the changes to the story, but I don't remember the specifics. This could be bullshit though.

Also, I don't like how removed some of the best parts of SM's plot like the scene with Lillie in Exeggutor isle and the photo Rotom takes in Hau'oli at the beginning showing up in the credits.

I would say get Sun or Moon or Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon, get one if you want don't get anymore. The plot is fucked in the latter two and the gameplay is a joke in the former two it really comes down to that.

Do you stop reading after the comma or are you just that retarded? Pick Sun or Moon if you want a better story, pick Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon if you want better gameplay, the only difference between each pair are a few Version Exclusives and some other irrelevant shit, unless there's a Pokemon you really like that's version exclusive it doesn't make a difference.

The Ultra games are better than the base games in every way except story. They butchered the good things in the originals so hard it’s actually funny. If you haven’t played the originals and just go with Ultra then it’s fine, no reason to play the originals otherwise. Just go with whatever Ultra version has exclusives that tickle your fancy.

They changed the main antagonist’s motivation and goal for the sake of having a cool twist, but they didn’t change anything else about her so all the evil stuff she did was literally for no reason and no one ever mentions it again and she’s trying to save the world rather than being self interested and driven mad by grief. It was so poorly done it resulted in legitimate plot holes and destroyed any drama the original had going for it.

I don't remember any of this and I haven't played vanilla SM.
Lusamine definitely makes no fucking sense though. She's a huge bitch for basically no reason and then suddenly she's nice.

I was actually in the same position as you, including not realizing Ultra wasn't a sequel. Just get Ultra, the regional dex is bigger and there are even a couple of brand-new Pokemon that aren't available in SM.

They siphoned Lusamine's tragedy into Necrozma. I can respect their attempt to give Necrozma it's moment, but I'm dumbfounded at how they managed to undermine Lusamine as much as they did.
